What are the rules and policies for listing my art?

General policies for listing artwork

  • Copyright and intellectual property:

Artists are responsible for ensuring they have the right to sell their work.
All artworks must be created or designed by the seller. Listing copyrighted work without permission is prohibited. Similarly, using a famous artist’s name to sell work “in their style” is typically not allowed. ZicoArt will remove listings upon receiving a notice of infringement.

  • Authenticity and transparency:

Artists may only upload and sell works that they created themselves.

Artists must provide accurate, honest information about the artwork and how it was created. For original art or reproduction of original, Artist should provide proof of authenticity, such as a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) or documented provenance.

  • High-quality listings:

Clear and accurate images are essential for sales. ZicoArt requires detailed descriptions of the artwork, including dimensions, medium, and date of completion. Providing multiple high-resolution photos taken in good light is often recommended.

  • Defined business practices:

Artists must clearly state their policies for returns, exchanges, and cancellations if different from ZicoArt.

  • AI policy: While AI can be used for preliminary work, the final artwork must be significantly modified and developed by the artist. Uploading art that is entirely AI-generated is prohibited.

  • Ethical conduct:

ZicoArt strictly prohibits the sale of artworks that promote hatred, violence, promote discrimination, hate speech, or illegal activities. Any transgression will result in the immediate suspension of the Artist’s account.

Artists are also typically not allowed to facilitate off-platform transactions to avoid fees.

  • Condition for Antiques:

All alterations, repairs, or conservation treatments performed on the art must be disclosed in the listing description.

Art and Inventory Management

Artwork Title/Name

Each piece should have a unique title that reflects its theme or concept.

Capturing your artwork in its best light is a crucial step in presenting it to potential buyers. Here are guidelines to help you photograph your art effectively:

Arrangement

Set up your artwork against a neutral, light-colored background (preferably white) to prevent any color distortion in your photos.

Lighting

Utilize diffused or natural sunlight for the most flattering effects. Avoid direct sunlight, as it will be too harsh, soften it with a white fabric or curtain to eliminate glare and ensure even lighting. For indoor lighting, avoid using direct artificial lights or flash; instead, opt for multiple indirect light sources (like Softbox) or a reflector to achieve a balanced illumination.

Key Factors that Influence Art Prices

  • Artist’s Reputation and Career Stage: Your experience, exhibition history, awards, and recognition within the art world are major factors. Prices for an artist with an established reputation and a steady selling history will be higher than for an emerging artist who is just starting out.

  • Size and Medium: Larger pieces often command a higher price due to the increased materials and time required. Similarly, the medium used (e.g., oil on canvas versus a work on paper for paintings. Bronze, stone, and steel are often more expensive and labor-intensive than plaster or resin for sculptures.) can influence the perceived value.

  • Rarity and Demand: Unique or limited-edition pieces are more sought after and will have a higher value. High demand for your style or subject matter can also drive-up prices.

  • Complexity and Technique: The level of detail, skill, and effort involved in creating a piece contributes to its value.

  • Provenance: The history of ownership, including if the work has been part of notable collections or prestigious exhibitions, can significantly increase its value.

  • Market and Location: The art market where you are selling (e.g., a local fair, an online marketplace, or a gallery) and your geographical location can affect pricing.

  • Cost of Materials and Labor: While not the only factor, the cost of materials and the time spent on a piece are a foundational element of its price, especially for new artists.

When an artist decides to sell prints, they have a choice between traditional limited edition prints and a more modern approach, timed releases (also known as time-limited editions). Both strategies have unique benefits and drawbacks, and the “best” choice depends on the artist’s goals and target audience.

Limited Edition Prints

Limited edition prints are created in a fixed, pre-determined quantity. Once the last print is sold, the edition is closed and never produced again. This creates a sense of scarcity and exclusivity.

Benefits for the Artist:

  • Higher Value and Prestige: The fixed, small number of prints makes them more valuable to collectors. This can lead to higher prices per print and enhance an artist’s reputation as a creator of exclusive, collectible work.
  • Targeting Collectors: Limited editions are attractive to serious art collectors and those who view art as a long-term investment. The scarcity and clear documentation (numbering and Certificates of Authenticity) help maintain and increase the print’s value over time.
  • Builds Demand: The fear of missing out (FOMO) on a rare piece can encourage buyers to act quickly, driving initial sales and creating a buzz around the release.

General Principles of Sales Tax for Artists:

Even for artists doing only online sales, sales tax responsibilities can be quite significant and are often more complex than for purely brick-and-mortar businesses due to evolving “economic nexus” rules.

Shipping and Logistics

The buyer is responsible for paying the shipping and handling costs, which are calculated and added to the purchase price at checkout.

All artworks sold on ZicoArt must be carefully packed for transit. Given that your art may travel across states or internationally, proper packaging is essential to ensure it arrives at its new home in pristine condition. Below are the minimum packaging requirements. Feel free to exceed these if necessary and consult with your shipping provider regarding their insurance options.

Sending Boxed (for stretched canvases with or without frames)

  • Begin with a layer of acid-free tissue paper or glassine paper directly on the artwork surface.
  • Wrap the artwork in suitable layers of bubble wrap, ensuring all corners are protected with additional cardboard corners as necessary.
  • Place the wrapped artwork into a double-wall cardboard box. The artwork should fit snugly within the box to prevent movement during transit.
  • Consider professional packing services like Pack & Send. Note that ZicoArt does not cover packaging costs.
  • Mark the package clearly with ‘Fragile’ stickers or tape.
  • For extra-large or heavily textured artwork, consider using a wooden crate or extra-heavy-duty cardboard.
